Our Beginning
The Menstrual Equity Initiative (MĚI) is a nonprofit organization working to improve menstrual health through education, research, and access to menstrual products.
MĚI was founded by Elise Tao after seeing how menstrual symptoms and health concerns were often overlooked or misunderstood. She recognized the need for better education, greater awareness, and stronger support for people who menstruate.
The name MĚI (美) means “beautiful” in Chinese and reflects our belief that everyone who menstruates deserves accurate health information, access to essential products, and the confidence to care for their health.
MĚI works to reduce barriers to menstrual health education and products by creating educational resources, supporting research, and promoting menstrual equity in communities.
OUR MISSION
What we Do
We advance research, education, and policy that promote menstrual and reproductive health for everyone.
We strive to eliminate the stigma surrounding menstruation and hormonal changes, ensure equitable access to menstrual products, and empower individuals with the knowledge to understand and care for their bodies.
We believe that menstrual health is not a privilege—it is a fundamental right.
